Purpose of the website

Purpose of the website should be very clear and you should be focused on what you want your website to be...so take a paper and a pen and write down clearly the purpose of the website,

e.g. if you want to make the website which sell the products it's should be fast to download and displays the items nicely, and have clear payment criteria.

or if you are making a good informational website then it should display the information nicely, have soothing colors with a combination of relevant images

or if you are making an entertainment website it can have any number of animations or nice pictures and you can use funky colors

or if you are making the kids website then it can use all those vibrant colors with animations and funky fonts

Know your users

We always make website for the targeted set of people and we keep this in mind right through planning step. So by now we should be clear of who shall be the visitor of our website. It is a fact that everybody shall not like your website but at least knowing your visitors, though hypothetically only, can help you a great deal while designing your website.

Designer’s perspective

Being the developer or the designer you may want to make all your websites to be outstanding in design with latest techniques but while planning a design for the website it is required to analyze if too much of decorations hampers what you want to communicate to the users.

Content Planning

We might not have the actual content ready but may have fair idea what are we going to display, since we go step by step through the planning process. So clearly write down the page headings and purposes. This will provide the broader perspective of your website before it is actually build. Though the content keeps on evaluating with time but we can keep this as basic model and make further changes in it.

Website Structure

The structure of the website should be like a pyramid, with home page on the top. This page should focus on the website concept. The home page should be linked to the 5-15 keyword focused content pages. These pages are further linked to more specific keyword focused content pages. The point is to keep the high traffic keywords at the level two. For a reason that the spiders (a software program that the Search Engine uses) goes out to follow the links and indexes the most profitable pages first.
